When you are planning your outdoor Christmas lights one of the most important steps is deciding a theme. The effect you want to achieve is dependant upon the space you have available and any trees or garden items that can either be used or be a hindrance. There are many themes available to use the standard ones include the Nativity, Santa and his sleigh, Elves and Santa’s workshop at the North Pole, snowmen, reindeer feeding. Another alternative is to create your own theme, some people like to go very non Christmas and have palm trees and the like. Once you have chosen your theme you have a direction to work towards and the whole process becomes easier. The design of the lighting is to achieve your theme, the colors you choose will also be those that suit your theme.

The best time to start planning a Christmas display is when everyone has put their lights up – yes that’s right a year in advance. Once you have worked out the lighting you need, be it animated lights or string lights and the size of strings and bulbs you are ready to go shopping. This means you can plan buying the strings you need and hunt down bargains. With Christmas lights buying just after Christmas is usually the best time, when the stores wish to get rid of stock and if you are lucky you will get and excellent deal. Try to buy spare bulbs at the same time . But if you keep your eyes open through the year it is possible to pick up special offers.

For those of us who just put up outside Christmas lights without much planning it often does look like we just slung to the lights up and it can look very unorganized. A planned approach to your Christmas yard lighting will result in a pleasing display that you and your neighbors can all appreciate.
